WhatsApp is testing a groundbreaking feature that could redefine how users connect on the platform — replacing phone numbers with usernames.
The upcoming update, currently in the beta testing phase, will allow users to create unique usernames, similar to what’s available on Instagram, Telegram, and X (formerly Twitter). This marks one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy upgrades yet.
With this feature, users will be able to chat or join groups without revealing their phone numbers, offering greater privacy — especially in large communities or business interactions where sharing personal details can feel intrusive.
Leaked screenshots from the beta version reveal a new “Username” field in profile settings, enabling users to select distinctive names and conceal their phone numbers if they choose.
However, experts have cautioned that this could also introduce risks such as impersonation or username duplication. In response, WhatsApp is reportedly working on verification measures to safeguard users from misuse.
If fully rolled out, this change could transform how over two billion people communicate globally, shifting WhatsApp’s focus from numbers to names.
