Nollywood star Yvonne Jegede has sparked conversation in the entertainment scene after openly stating that appearance can—and often should—play a role in movie casting. During a candid interview with Hip TV, the actress shared her perspective on why looks matter in show business.
Jegede explained that the film industry thrives on visual appeal, making an actor’s physique, presence, and screen charisma important factors for casting directors.
“In showbiz, looks are very important. What you show people is what brings business. So appearance matters a lot,” she said, adding that physical presentation often influences audience engagement and the marketability of a film.
However, Jegede was quick to balance her point. She reminded aspiring actors that talent, professionalism, and personal development also play major roles in getting ahead in the industry.
“A lot of people have been able to get roles by doing other things—not necessarily looks. But if your looks are your strongest asset, then put it forward. And this is not unique to Nollywood; it happens in every industry,” she emphasized.
On the subject of earnings in Nollywood, Jegede highlighted the importance of longevity and consistency. According to her, actors who have paid their dues and built a solid name for themselves naturally earn higher fees.
“It depends on your milestone and the dues you’ve paid. If you’ve been here long enough and you’ve worked hard, you will definitely be paid your worth,” she explained.
Jegede also shared a positive outlook on the progress of the Nigerian film industry. Although Nollywood doesn’t cover all her expenses, she said the improvement over the years is undeniable.
“Nollywood pays the bills—not all the bills—but it does pay the bills. I’m very happy with where we are now compared to before,” she added with a smile.
