Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced support for a proposed US-backed framework to end the Ukraine war, just as President Donald Trump warned that Kyiv has limited time to accept a peace deal.
Only months ago, Trump stunned many observers by suggesting Ukraine could regain territories lost to Russia — and potentially “go even further.” Writing during his visit to the UN General Assembly, Trump said he reached this view “after getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia military and economic situation.”
Earlier, he had floated the idea of a possible land “swap” to bring the conflict to an end. But when questioned on 17 October during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the White House, Trump sounded less confident.
“You never know,” he said at the time. “War is very interesting.”
Today, speaking to Fox Radio, Trump’s tone shifted once again. He warned that Ukraine is likely to lose more territory “in a short period of time” if it rejects the emerging peace proposal.
Putin: Ukraine and Europe Still Believe Russia Can Be Defeated
At a meeting with his national security cabinet, Putin said Moscow is prepared to show the “flexibility” requested in ongoing diplomatic efforts — an indirect signal that Russia may be open to negotiations.
However, he insisted that Ukraine and its European partners still hold an “illusion that Russia can be strategically defeated,” warning that more Ukrainian towns could fall under Russian control.
Pointing to Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region — which Russia claims to have seized — Putin said the situation there “will be repeated” unless Kyiv agrees to talks.
“We are satisfied with this,” he added, arguing that continued gains would help Russia achieve the objectives of its “special military operation.”
Ukraine denies that Kupyansk has fallen, insisting fighting is ongoing.
