The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially approved 13 new undergraduate degree programmes for Nigerian universities, marking a significant step in aligning higher education with emerging global and national demands. The directive, conveyed in a circular dated 22 October 2025 and signed by NUC’s Executive Secretary, Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, highlights the move as part of the Commission’s efforts to modernise curricula, strengthen quality assurance, and ensure university graduates possess skills relevant to the 21st century labour market.
NUC emphasises that 70 per cent of the curricular content for these new programmes was developed by experts within the Nigerian University System (NUS) in March 2025, with the remaining 30 per cent to be institutionalised by individual universities. Universities interested in offering any of the approved programmes must undergo a Resource Assessment Visit by NUC and are expected to begin implementation from the 2025/2026 academic session, subject to readiness.
NUC states that these additions respond to evolving socioeconomic needs—such as technological innovation, security, public health, environmental sustainability and ethical finance.
Below is the full list of the newly approved degree programmes, along with a brief description of each:
- B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence
Focuses on machine learning, robotics, data science, automation—preparing students to design intelligent systems. - B.Ed. Classical Christian Education
A faith-based education programme combining moral/value formation, Christian classical studies and teaching methods. - B.Sc. Human Kinetics (Sport Management option)
Combines sports science (exercise physiology, sports psychology) with the business and management of sport. - B.Eng. Geomatics Engineering
Involves surveying, satellite/drones mapping, GPS technologies and spatial data systems. - B.HLS (or B.CH.S) Community Health Science
Trains professionals in public health, maternal/child health, environmental hygiene and disease prevention at community level. - B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies
A multidisciplinary course covering intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, risk management, counter-terrorism, criminology. - B.Sc. Islamic Economics and Finance
Focuses on Sharia-compliant finance, ethical investment, profit-sharing banking and Islamic financial instruments. - B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology
Studies parasites and insects and their impact on human/animal health, agriculture and public health systems. - B.Sc. Telecommunication Science
Covers data, voice, video transmission across networks, mobile communication, fibre-optic systems, satellite tech. - B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
Prepares students to manage water systems, sanitation infrastructure, hygiene programmes and environmental protection. - B.Sc. Cooperative Economics and Management
Teaches cooperative societies, social finance, entrepreneurship and managing community-based enterprises. - B.Sc. Nuclear Science
Covers nuclear physics, radiation safety, applications of nuclear tech in medicine, agriculture, clean energy. - B.Eng. Nuclear Engineering
Builds on nuclear science to train engineers in design, operation and maintenance of nuclear systems and reactors.
While the new programmes represent bold and forward-looking addition to Nigeria’s higher education offerings, delivering them will require significant investments—especially in infrastructure, specialised laboratories, qualified faculty, and industry linkages.
For instance, programmes like Artificial Intelligence, Nuclear Engineering or Telecommunication Science demand advanced equipment, research facilities and partnerships. Without such capacity, universities risk offering programmes in name only.
Moreover, universities will need to design their institutional component (the 30 per cent) in line with each programme’s unique demands, while ensuring compliance with NUC’s Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).
What this means for students
- More diverse and modern pathways: Students will now have the option to enroll in courses that align with emerging sectors—AI, security studies, WASH, nuclear science—rather than only more traditional degree programmes.
- Training at home: Previously, some of these fields required studying abroad; with local offerings approved, students may access cutting-edge disciplines domestically.
- Demand for capacity: Prospective students should check whether their chosen university has been approved for the new programme and is ready to deliver it. Implementation might not be immediate in all universities.
NUC’s move signals a shift in the higher education landscape: from traditional programmes toward future-oriented, interdisciplinary and technologically anchored offerings. If properly implemented, this could enhance Nigeria’s talent pipeline for sectors critical to national development—digital economy, security, health, environment, clean energy.
However, the success of the initiative will depend on follow-through: funding for labs and faculty, accreditation visits by NUC, and universities being ready to deliver quality rather than just offer names of programmes.
For now, Nigerian universities and students alike can anticipate a new chapter in degree-programme offerings from the 2025/2026 session—but with the reminder that readiness and quality will determine ultimate impact.
