The Federal Ministry of Environment has warned of possible flooding in 15 states and 69 communities, following forecasts of heavy rainfall between September 24 and 28, 2025.
The alert was issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEW) of the Ministry in a statement signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.
According to the Ministry, the advisory is part of routine early-warning measures designed to minimize the loss of lives, property, and livelihoods during Nigeria’s peak rainy season.
Flooding continues to pose a major challenge across the country, displacing thousands annually, destroying infrastructure, and threatening food security. Data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) revealed that as of September 20, 2025, no fewer than 232 people had lost their lives, 121,224 displaced, and 681 injured, while 339,658 individuals had been affected by floods nationwide.
The FEW Centre noted that the forecasted downpour could trigger flooding in the following areas:
- Adamawa: Farkumo, Jimeta, Mayo-Belwa, Wuro Bokki, Yola
- Anambra: Ogbakuba
- Bayelsa: Amassoma, Ikpidama, Kalama, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Odi, Odoni, Ogbia, Oloibiri, Oporoma, Otouke, Peremabiri, Sagbama, Yenagoa
- Borno: Damasak
- Delta: Abigborodo, Aboh, Abraka, Agbor, Asaba, Forcados, Koko, Okoloba, Okpo-Krika, Patani, Sapele, Ughelli, Warri, Umugboma, Umukwata, Umuchi-Utchi
- Edo: Benin City, Okada
- Imo: Egbema, Oguta
- Kano: Bebeji, Gezawa, Gwarzo, Kano, Karaye, Tudun-Wada, Wudil
- Katsina: Jibia
- Ondo: Akure, Ikare, Ita-Ogbolu
- Oyo: Iseyin, Oyo
- Rivers: Ahoada, Itu
- Sokoto: Isa, Shagari
- Taraba: Bandawa, Gembu, Ngaruwa, Serti
- Zamfara: Anka, Bungudu, Bukuyum, Gummi, Gusau, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi
The Ministry urged residents, state governments, and emergency response agencies to take the forecast seriously, prepare ahead, and implement preventive measures to mitigate risks.
