The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has reminded Nigerians that U.S. visa application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, regardless of whether the application is approved or denied.
The clarification came in a statement shared on the Embassy’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, following growing concerns from Nigerians about the high financial burden of visa applications.
“We hear your concerns regarding U.S. visa application fees. Like most countries, U.S. visa fees cover the cost of processing the application, regardless of the outcome. While fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, each application is reviewed thoroughly and fairly. For best results, prepare your application carefully and use the resources on our website,” the statement read.
In recent weeks, many Nigerians have taken to social media to express frustration over the system, describing the process as financially draining—particularly when their visa applications are denied without an option to reuse their payments.
According to the U.S. Mission, visa fees are not a guarantee of approval but are used to cover administrative costs tied to processing each application. This aligns with global visa practices, where fees fund consular operations, background checks, and application handling.
The Embassy encouraged prospective travelers to:
