Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that “the real opposition has begun” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku received his ADC membership card at his Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State on Monday, ending months of speculation after his dramatic exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The former presidential candidate said his move marks the start of a new political front aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“With this card, the real opposition has begun. We will chase the APC out of power,” Atiku stated.
He called on his nationwide supporters to immediately register with the ADC and join the emerging coalition.
Adamawa ADC Chairman, Shehu Yohanna, who conducted the registration, said Atiku’s defection officially launches the party’s statewide mobilisation. Senator Sadiq Yar’Adua, National Secretary of the ADC Registration Committee, urged citizens—especially youths and women—to register and “take charge of Nigeria’s political future.”
Atiku’s unveiling attracted a host of influential politicians from Adamawa, including ex-Governor Bindow Jibrilla, Senator Aishatu Binani, Senator Ahmed Barata, Senator Aziz Nyako and Senator Ishaku Abbo—fueling talk of a major realignment in northern politics.
The former vice president resigned from the PDP in July, saying the party had lost its founding values and that internal conflicts were irreparable.
PUNCH had earlier reported that Atiku and several opposition heavyweights—including Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Nasir el-Rufai and former APC chairman John Oyegun—had agreed to use the ADC as a joint platform to challenge the APC in 2027.
